Former 19th President of the United States, General Ulysses S. Grant achieved international fame as the leading Union General in the American Civil War. He captured Vicksburg in 1863 and Richmond in 1865. Following the victories he was the one who accepted the surrender of his Confederate opponent Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Courthouse.
