Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia, the main Confederate Army in the eastern theatre of the War. His Notable Victories were Seven Days' Battle, Second Bull Run, and Chancellorsville.
Despite showing considerable skill and bravery, from the Wilderness onwards Lee was unable to stop the Union army under Grant - which was vastly larger and far better supplied and equipped - from advancing and grinding the Confederate forces down until eventually the whole Confederate army was forced to surrender at Appomattox Courthouse (April 1865), thus ending the Civil War.
